The Love & Respect Experience-Review

My husband and I are very intentional in the time that spend together. We have weekly date nights and in two years, we've only missed date night during the awful three weeks that Brett worked nights without a single day off. Not too bad considering we have three kids under the age of four. In addition to date nights, we also like to do devotionals together. I picked The Love & Respect Experience by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs to review since it's tag line is "A husband friendly devotional that wives truly love." It's hard to find devotionals that my husband enjoys as much as I do.

The Love and Respect Experience is a great book and it contains 52 devotionals. There is no order that you have to follow, which I like because you can do the chapter that fits into your life that day. Some of the topics in the book are forgiveness, showing love, sex, and perspective. But with 52 "chapters" there is a topic for everyone.

One of the concepts in the book is the 80:20 ratio. Dr. Eggerichs explains that 80 percent of the time, your marriage is good and 20 percent of the time, your marriage is not so good. But it is in our nature to focus on the 20 percent instead of looking at the 80 percent. I thought this was an eye opening idea, not just in my marriage but in my other relationships as well. It's so easy to focus on what is negative instead of what is positive.

The point of the book is to strengthen your relationship with God, which it is. But a side benefit for us is that it strengthens our relationship with each other as well. Twice a week we are turning off the TV and really looking into our relationship with each other and God. This is a bonding time that is missed so many other nights just because we are busy with life. I really taking some time to focus on us and block out the rest of the world.

I highly recommend this book to any married couple. Even if your spouse is reluctant to do devotionals, I think this book will change their mind.
