How to Make Your Own Colored Pasta

Back in my teaching days, I made colored pasta for craft projects. It's really easy to make and much cheaper than buying pasta that has already been dyed. And I was ignoring my family on Pinterest the other day when I saw an edible recipe for dyed pasta. And I thought it would be a fun project for my 3 year old.

To make your own colored pasta, you just need three ingredients.
  • pasta
  • food coloring
  • vinegar

All you have to do is put the pasta in a plastic bag. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to coat the pasta. Then your child can add the food coloring and shake the bag to coat the pasta. Allow the pasta to dry for a few hours and then you can cook it or make crafts with it. We decided to cook with it.

Isabella wanted blue and red pasta. The food coloring dyes the water so I cooked it separately.

Look how bright it cooked!

Isabella was so excited to eat her pasta, but she refused to have her picture taken so you get to see Mark. It was fun cooking the pasta with Isabella and even more fun eating it. Even as an adult I thought dinner was better with colored pasta. The next time I'm going to try a new pasta dish, I think I'm going to have Isabella dye the pasta. That way she'll be more excited and willing to try it.

  1. Ooh, it's so pretty! When I see colored pasta at the store, usually it's so dull looking, I'm surprised yours turned out so bright!
