How to Make Chocolate Covered Fruit

My kiddos and I were at Costco and they were sampling the Dole frozen chocolate covered banana bites. Of course my kids loved them and asked for them. I said no, since I had no intention of spending 10 times the price on something that I can make myself. So we went home with the strawberries and bananas that I bought at Costco knowing that we already had chocolate at home.

I have tried to dip fruit in chocolate in the past with bad results. The chocolate always melted weird and got clumpy. But I read that you should stir in 1 tablespoon of shortening into the chocolate to keep the chocolate creamy and smooth. I decided to try it out and see how it came out. And my girls decided to be my little helpers.

1 cup chocolate chips
1 T shortening

I melted my chocolate on very low heat.

I put toothpicks in the banana bites for easy dipping.

Of course the best part of dipping is licking the chocolate off your hands.

I did the strawberries, they did the bananas. Can you tell which banana I dipped?

I put the strawberries in the refrigerator and the bananas into the freezer. Then I was really mean and I told the kids that they had to wait until dinner to eat them. Even meaner? I texted my husband and told him that we made him a treat for dessert but I wouldn't tell him what it was.

Now I think chocolate dipped fruit is an excellent waste of perfectly good fruit. But the other chocolate fanatics in my house loved them. This was an easy and quick dessert to make. And cheap since strawberries are in season right now! (Bananas are always cheap!)
