My Gym Confessions

I took a few weeks off from my Friday confessions since life has been very hectic and blogging on Fridays has become very difficult for me. And while I took my mini break, I realized how much I enjoy writing my confession posts.

I confess...
I did something I never thought I would do this summer, I joined a gym.

I confess....
I joined the gym for a few reasons, one being that my husband hurt his back last spring and he was told that he would need to exercise on a regular basis to keep it from being a problem again. The second reason was that I put on last year's jeans this summer and they didn't fit. You know you cannot hide the fact that you've gained weight any longer when your jeans will not button. Oh denial, how I miss you.

I confess....
Those are pretty good reasons for joining a gym. And they are pretty good reasons for going after you've joined. But they are not the reason why four months later I go to the gym at least 3 times a week.

I confess....
I go to the gym because they have daycare there and for $40 a month I can go to the gym everyday for up to 2 hours and someone will take care of my kids for me. What a deal huh?

I confess....
Normally I start an exercise program and I do very well with it for a month or so and then I quit. But going to the gym and working out in peace as been such a wonderful break that I have no intention of quitting anytime soon. In fact, getting away from my kids is a huge motivator for me to workout some days. Not every day, but on those hard days when nap time is just too far away.

I confess....
The part that comes after the workout is even better. I get to shower without anyone opening the curtain to tell me that so and so did this. And no one can get into anything while I'm in the shower. Not that my angels would do anything like that.

I confess....
And then after I've had an uninterrupted shower I can do my makeup in peace, chat with someone in the locker room since I always run into someone I know there. Usually when I'm all sweaty and gross is when this happens, but sometimes it's after I've showered.

I confess....
But the best part is still to come. After I'm showered and dressed I can go sit in the quiet room and enjoy the dark quiet time. Or I can check Facebook or Twitter and spend a few minutes alone. Oh how I love these few minutes!

I confess....
Getting a few hours to myself (though it's rarely 2 full hours since I don't have that kind of time very often) is so indescribably wonderful. I'm so relaxed when I leave the gym. It really has been a life saver for me.

I confess....
I can honestly say that this is the smartest $40 a month that we spend. I figured it out that in October I went to the gym 18 times. If you just look at the child care costs it's $2.22 per visit. I cannot find someone to watch one child for one hour for that price.

I confess....
Two weeks ago I was exhausted from being up late with a kid having a nightmare and just life in general. The kids were getting into trouble and I was DONE! I went to the gym and I didn't workout. I sat in the hot tub and then I took a nice long shower and got dressed. After an hour away, my kids were happy to see me and I was happy to see them too.

I confess....
I didn't feel guilty about it. I still don't. I needed that time alone.

I confess....
So in four months, I've lost 7 pounds without dieting or giving up alcohol. (Because if I'm being truly honest here, that was never going to happen.) My jeans fit again so I don't have to buy new clothes this winter! And I feel so much better and I'm less stressed out. Which makes me a better mom, wife, and friend.

Yep best $40 a month I've ever spent!

Do you go to the gym? What motivates you to go?

  2. Not too long ago my husband said something about me working out all the time so I could lose weight. I looked at him and said, “That’s not why I go to the gym, if I went there to lose weight I would have quit years ago.” I go to the gym because working out reduces my stress, I’ve made friends there and can enjoy a laugh or two before going home after work.

    1. Exactly, the staying fit and losing weight part is just bonus.

  3. I love it - I REALLY need to get back to the gym. I gained 50 lbs after having my daughter.... 7 years ago. Now my weight is at an all time high, still under 200 but for me it is high. The ironic thing here is that when I was a teen I had issues with anorexia and was down to 107. Clearly that is a NON issue these days. The closest gym to my house is a 15 minute drive on the freeway BUT they are building one within biking distance from my house that is supposed to open soon....ahhh I always have an excuse, but your post was AWESOME.

    1. Thank you! I would have a hard time going to a gym that is far away too. Mine is right around the corner so that is not a problem.

  5. Ohhh! Do you think I could schedule my gym time at the same time that the kids are supposed to be doing homework? That is my most dreaded time of the day! I hate helping with homework! That would motivate me to go. hmmmm....

    1. I say do it! It would free up your dreaded duty and then they would only ask for help where they truly need it. Instead of asking for help every two seconds.

  6. Found you via SITS. And I go to a gym with child care, too. To work out (cough, cough). Best part: the kids think it's something fun I've organized for THEM. (*cue maniacal laughter here*)

    1. I love that my kids think we go to the gym so they can play too. They even ask me if we can go sometimes. Hahahahah!

  7. I think I need to get a gym pass. I'm a runner and let the kids nap in the jogger while I run, but maybe for the winter I'll switch to the gym. Uninterrupted shower? Heaven!!

    1. The shower is almost the best part. I love getting to take a shower without worrying about what my kids are getting into while I'm in there.

  8. I confess...
I've been paying for the gym for two years and have gone....ONCE!!!
I love to workout..just in the comfort of my own home and I've achieved weight loss success by doing so. I have no idea what it is about the gym that gets to me - besides the smell - I just don't like to see people while I'm working out and I'd much go out for a jog in the fresh air than in a room full of sweaty people.

    I confess..
Everytime i go to cancel the membership, I feel like I quit and I make it a point to go "next week" which never happens....HELP!

    1. Yeah, quitting the gym is very hard. My last gym membership went paid for 10 months past the last time I stepped foot in there. I felt so guilty about quitting but I finally went in. They weren't very surprised since I hadn't been there for so long.

  9. My kids are now in school during the day but became quite a gym rat when they were infants and toddlers. I was actually in the best shape I'd been in since high school. Those stolen minutes motivated me to make it to the gym as often as possible! Great post! Stopping by from SITS.
