Caffeine, The Ultimate Addiction

Oh caffeine, I'm better off without you and yet I know I'll keep coming back to you.

For the second time my husband and I are swearing off processed foods for 30 days. I do not take my caffeine without anything processed to go along with it which makes caffeine off limits for 30 days.

Do you know how hard it is to give up coffee in January? Or Diet Coke and Captain after a long day with 3 sick demons kids?
Kids sure are cute when they're sleeping

The first three days are pure torture as your body goes through withdrawals. Huge headaches and the realization of getting out of bed in -1 degree temperature without a hot beverage just sucks. But after the first few days the headaches go away, the weather in the South goes back to normal, and your energy levels soar!

I feel so much better when I'm off caffeine. Normally I get so tired around 3pm and need a little pick me up. When I'm off caffeine that doesn't happen. Plus I sleep better! I just feel better in general. I know part of that is my diet, when you're eating real food you feel much better. No caffeine is a huge part of my increased energy levels as well. It's not too surprising since I'm not crashing after the caffeine wears off.

Even with all this knowledge, I know I will start drinking it the first day after my challenge ends.

What is wrong with me?

I've decided caffeine is my addiction. I know it's bad for me and yet I just cannot give it up. Flavored coffee is so tasty and Diet Coke and I are BFFs, we can't break up after the years I've poured into our relationship.

Besides how would I drink my Captain?

I'm linking up with Mama Kat with the writing prompt - I'm better off without it.

  1. Good luck! It's so hard to let go of the caffeine!

  2. I gave up caffeine with my first pregnancy because I thought I was supposed to. I was so miserable. When I mentioned it to my OB that I was so sad to have to give up my coffee when I was pregnant the second time she just laughed and said "A cup of coffee isn't going to hurt anything." and I've had a cup (or two) every day since. It's my addiction too, but I remind myself that as far as addictions go, it's a pretty mild one, right?

    1. It is indeed! My doctor said the same thing except coffee and Diet Coke made me so sick that I wasn't even tempted to drink them when I was pregnant.

  3. I need a little caffeine in my life even though I'm not really suppose to have it. I couldn't imagine giving up my coffee, especially with all this cold weather we have been having. Good luck.

Oh did see we got selected for the same SITS Girls tribe? I thought how awesome is this since I'm already subscribed to your blog. Looking forward to connecting with you more!

    1. The cold weather part has been the hardest for me. When we did this during the summer giving up coffee was easy.

  4. oh momma! more power to ya, I have to have "crap" creamer in my coffee; any thing else I could go without. I could do non-processed but it would be too much cream and sugar! Good luck!

    1. I can't imagine drinking coffee without the cream, that's what makes it taste so good!

  5. Braver than I am, I could never give up caffeine. Limiting myself to one cup a day while pregnant was hard enough. Stopping by from SITS

    1. When I was pregnant my usual caffeine fixes made me sick so I wasn't even tempted to drink them so that was easy for me. Not so much now.

  6. I've considered giving up my daily Diet Cokes, but I figure that there are so many things I could be putting in my body that are way worse (like drugs or cigarette smoke) that caffeine really isn't that bad. (Don't you love my rationalization?!?!) Good luck!

Also, I'm one of your SITS tribe members. Glad to meet you!

    1. I do love that rationalization. I'll never be able to go more than 30 days without one. Only 11 days to go!
